Frequently Asked Questions about Advion® Ant Gel (FAQ)
Can I use Advion Ant Gel outdoors?
Yes, Advion Ant Gel is approved for both indoor and outdoor use — specifically for nesting areas and trails around buildings. When used outdoors, apply the gel spot-wise in protected locations, such as in wall joints, under window sills, on terrace baseboards, along paving joints, or directly on ant trails at the foundation. Important: The gel must not be exposed to direct weather, as rain reduces the bait effect and the active ingredient Indoxacarb should not enter the environment according to labeling (P273, H412). For open areas, flowerbed edges, or paving stones, we recommend using a lockable bait station (e.g., our David® bait station), which protects the gel from rain, UV light, and non-target organisms. This keeps the effect stable outdoors for several weeks.
How long does it take for Advion Ant Gel to work?
Visible effects typically appear after 2 to 4 days, and complete elimination of the ant nest usually takes 1 to 3 weeks depending on colony size. The reason: The active ingredient Indoxacarb (0.05%) does not kill ants immediately but is carried by workers into the nest and passed on to larvae and the queen through trophallaxis. This so-called domino or nest transfer effect is the mode of action — which is why Advion Ant Gel is not a quick fix but a sustainable solution against the entire nest including the queen. Without this delayed effect, the first ants would die before passing on the bait, leaving the nest intact.
Why do more ants appear after application?
A temporary increase in ant activity directly at the bait is normal and a positive sign — the bait is accepted. In the first days, workers recruit nestmates to transport the attractive gel into the nest. What looks like a worsening is actually the start of control: ants actively distribute the active ingredient in the nest. Important during this phase: Do not wipe away the bait, do not spray, and do not use cleaning agents nearby — this would interrupt the chain of effect and delay control by days or weeks. After about a week, visible activity decreases significantly.
Should I apply Advion Ant Gel directly on the ant nest?
No, the gel should not be applied directly on or into the ant nest but along ant trails and entry points. Applying it directly on the nest would alarm the ants and only reach a small part of the colony. On trails, many workers take up the gel, carry it into the nest, and feed the queen and brood — this is the desired domino effect. Apply 1 to 5 small gel spots (about 0.1 g each) or a narrow gel strip up to 5 cm long on cracks, crevices, behind baseboards, or at wall-floor transitions per square meter. For heavy infestations, distribute more small bait points rather than fewer large ones.
Can I use ant spray and ant gel at the same time?
No, sprays and bait gel should not be used simultaneously or in the same location, as sprays significantly impair the gel’s effect. Contact insecticides and repellents kill workers before they can carry the bait into the nest — the nest and queen remain untouched, and the infestation returns. Aggressive cleaning agents, vinegar, essential oils, or home remedies like baking soda directly at the bait point also disrupt ant trails and reduce bait uptake. If you need to clean a visible area (e.g., kitchen counter before guests) acutely, wipe only the affected spot with clear water and leave bait points undisturbed. For pure acute situations without nest control, contact agents are the right choice — but then without simultaneous gel use.
What to do if ants are still present after 2 weeks?
If no significant reduction is visible after 14 days, there are usually one of four causes:
(1) Competing food — open food, crumbs, pet food, or sweet residues distract from the bait.
(2) Wrong ant species — some species like Pharaoh ants have multiple nests and require broad application over a longer period; wood-destroying ants (carpenter ants) sometimes react differently.
(3) Multiple nests or a very large colony needing more bait points and time.
(4) Interfering factors such as recently used sprays, cleaners, or moved bait. Practical approach: Remove all food sources, place additional bait points on new trails, and observe for at least another week. If infestation persists, contact our product advice via WhatsApp or phone — we assist with cause analysis and may suggest combination strategies.
Is Advion Ant Gel safe for pets and children?
Advion Ant Gel is a biocidal product and must not be accessible to children or pets (label P102). When used properly — applied in cracks, crevices, behind baseboards, or in locked bait stations — the risk is very low because the amounts applied per bait point are minimal (approx. 0.1 g) and the active ingredient Indoxacarb is only converted into its toxic form through insect metabolism. Nevertheless, never place gel spots openly on floors, play areas, or near food and water bowls. For households with dogs, cats, or small children, we generally recommend using bait stations — this prevents accidental contact and additionally protects against drying out. Note: The product is approved exclusively for professional users.
