Frequently asked questions about Advion® Ant Gel (FAQ)
Can I also use Advion Ant Gel outdoors?
Yes, according to its approval, Advion Ant Gel is authorized for both indoor and outdoor use — specifically in nesting areas and along trails around buildings. For outdoor use, apply the gel in small amounts at sheltered locations, such as in joints in the exterior wall, beneath windowsills, along terrace baseboards, in paving joints, or directly on ant trails at the foundation. Important: The gel must not be exposed to direct weather, as rain reduces the bait effect and the active ingredient indoxacarb must not enter the environment according to the labeling (P273, H412). For open areas, bed edges, or paving slabs, we recommend using a lockable bait box (e.g. our David® bait box), which protects the gel from rain, UV light, and non-target organisms. This keeps the effect stable outdoors for several weeks.
How long does it take for Advion Ant Gel to work?
The first visible effects typically appear after 2 to 4 days; complete control of the ant nest generally takes 1 to 3 weeks, depending on the colony size. The reason is that the active ingredient indoxacarb (0.05%) does not kill ants immediately. Instead, worker ants carry it into the nest and pass it on to larvae and the queen through food exchange (trophallaxis). This so-called domino or nest-transfer effect is how the product works — which is precisely why Advion Ant Gel is not a quick-fix product, but a sustainable solution against the entire nest, including the queen. Without this delayed effect, the first ants would die before they could pass on the bait, leaving the nest intact.
Why do more ants suddenly appear after application?
A temporary increase in ant activity directly around the bait is normal and a positive sign — the bait is being accepted. During the first few days, worker ants recruit nestmates to transport the attractive gel to the nest. What may look like a worsening of the infestation is actually the beginning of control: the ants are actively distributing the active ingredient throughout the nest. Important during this phase: Do not wipe away the bait, do not treat the ants with spray, and do not use cleaning products nearby — this would interrupt the chain of action and delay control by days or weeks. After about a week, visible activity decreases significantly.
Should I apply Advion Ant Gel directly to the ant nest?
No, the gel should not be applied directly on or inside the ant nest. Instead, apply it along ant trails and at entry points. Applied directly at the nest, the bait could alert the ants and reach only a small part of the colony. Along trails, however, many worker ants take up the gel, carry it into the nest themselves, and feed it to the queen and brood — this is precisely the desired domino effect. Apply 1 to 5 small gel spots per square meter (approximately 0.1 g each) or a narrow gel strip up to 5 cm long in cracks, crevices, behind baseboards, or at wall-to-floor transitions. In cases of heavy infestation, it is better to distribute more small bait spots than a few large ones.
Can I use ant spray and ant gel at the same time?
No, sprays and bait gel should not be used at the same time or in the same location, as sprays can severely impair the effectiveness of the gel. Contact insecticides and repellent products kill worker ants before they can carry the bait into the nest — the nest and queen remain untouched, and the infestation returns. Aggressive cleaning products, vinegar, essential oils, or household remedies such as baking soda applied directly near the bait spot can also disrupt the ant trail and reduce bait uptake. If you need to keep a visible area clean in an acute situation (e.g. a kitchen counter before visitors arrive), wipe only the affected spot with clean water and leave the bait locations untouched. For purely acute situations without nest control, contact products are the right choice — but do not use them alongside gel.
What should I do if ants are still present after 2 weeks?
If there is no clear reduction after 14 days, there are usually one of four causes:
(1) Alternative food sources — exposed food, crumbs, pet food, or sugary residues may distract ants from the bait.
(2) Wrong ant species — some species, such as pharaoh ants, have multiple nests and require treatment over a larger area for a longer period; wood-destroying ants (carpenter ants) may also respond differently.
(3) Multiple nests or a very large colony that requires more bait spots and time.
(4) Interference factors such as recently used sprays, cleaning products, or moved bait. Practical procedure: Remove all food sources, place additional bait spots along new trails, and monitor for at least another week. If the infestation persists, contact our product advice team via WhatsApp or phone — we can help analyze the cause and, if necessary, suggest combination strategies.
Is Advion Ant Gel safe for pets and children?
Advion Ant Gel is a biocidal product and must be kept out of the reach of children and pets (labeling P102). When used correctly — applied in cracks, crevices, behind baseboards, or in closed bait boxes — the risk is very low because the quantities applied per bait spot are minimal (approx. 0.1 g), and the active ingredient indoxacarb is converted into its toxic form only through insect metabolism. Nevertheless, never place gel spots openly on floors, in play areas, or near food and water bowls. For households with dogs, cats, or small children, we generally recommend using bait boxes — this prevents accidental contact and also protects the gel from drying out. Note: According to its approval, the product is intended exclusively for professional users.
